Leukocytes are blood cells with different origins and functions; they include granulocytes, lymphocytes and monocytes.

Granulocytes arise in the bone marrow from the myeloblast and are differentiated for the phagocytosis function.

Lymphocytes which are formed in the lymphoid organs play a role in immune defence.

Monocytes have multiple functions (phagocytosis, antigen capture, transformation into other cells, etc.).

Usefulness:

  • The quantitative variations of leukocytes (plus or minus) beyond the normal limits and the morphological changes are important elements for the diagnosis of several disease states
