Bilirubin is produced in the macrophages by the enzyme catabolism of the hem fraction of various hemoproteins. About 80% of the circulating bilirubin is derived from aging erythrocytes. When the circulating erythrocytes reach the end of their normal lives of approximately 120 days, they are destroyed by the reticuloendothelial cells.

Usefulness:

  • A tool in detecting hepatitis, jaundice
