PHARMACOTHERAPEUTIC ACTION

Vitamin K3 is essential in hepatic synthesis of prothrombin, its being part of the group acting antihemoragic vitamins. Plays an important role in blood coagulation process and acts on the capillary endothelium and fibrinogen.

Most important events occurring in deficiency of vitamin K3 are bleeding and hypothrombinemia. In high doses, vitamin K3 activates reticulohistiocitar produces diuresis (in general edema), stimulates the liver and bone marrow function. In general, vitamin K needs are covered in most animals by food intake and digestive synthesis. Birds are exceptions to this rule. Deficiencies in vitamin K in birds are visible at autopsy: abdominal bleeding, ovarian, cloacal swabs, intestinal, etc.
