PHARMACOTHERAPEUTIC ACTION

Therapeutic effects of vitamin C are due to the role that it plays in redox processes. Promotes collagen formation, cartilage, dentine and ossein. Participate in the normal metabolism of fibroblasts, in fibrous callus formation, in case of fractures and calcification process; along with vitamin D favors the wound healing process. Involved in synthesis of intercellular substance and decreases capillary permeability (antiexsudativ effect), activates prothrombin (accelerates blood clotting), stimulates hematopoiesis, iron absorption from the intestine, mature erythrocytes, leukocytosis and trombocitosis. Stimulates steroid hormones, adrenaline in medulla, protects against oxidant factors, it is antagonistic to hormone thyroxine and tireorop. Participating in sex hormone synthesis. Increases the body’s resistance to infection, activating leukocyte phagocytosis. Increase effort endurance. Can compensate, in part, the deficit of vitamins A, E, B1, B2, B12 and pantothenic acid.

DOSAGE, ROUTE AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION

The product Vitamin C 10% – solution for injection – should be administered intravenously, intramuscularly or subcutaneously, in the following doses:

- In adult horses and cattle, intravenous: 2 -10 g ascorbic acid (20 -100 ml product). In cattle ketonemia may be given up to 20 g ascorbic acid (200 ml product);

- Sheep, goats, swine and youth large animals intravenously: 0.2 1 g ascorbic acid (2 -10 ml product) in swine, the product can be administered intramuscularly;

- In dogs and cats: intravenous or subcutaneous 0.05 -1.0 g ascorbic acid (0.5 -10 ml product), depending on size;

- In birds, intramuscularly: 0.01 to 0.05 g ascorbic acid (0.1 – 0.5 ml product).

It is recommended prior dilution of the product, ½ normal saline. Administration is slow. Treatment may be repeated daily for 2 to 4 days.

CONTRAINDICATIONS, PRECAUTIONS AND ADVERSE REACTIONS

Product administration is going to be done with sterile needles and injection site disinfected with alcohol. Not to be used mixed in combination with other medicines.

Avoid concomitant use with sulfonamides (risk of crystalluria). No special precautions for the use of vitamin C during pregnancy and lactation or lay period. High doses of vitamin C cause acidification of urine, promotes renal excretion of drugs (eg, mexiletine, quinidine) and reduce the effectiveness of antimicrobial drugs in urine (eg aminoglycosides, erythromycin).

Vitamin C can act synergistically with deferoxamine in removing iron, but in reality may influence growth in tissue iron toxicity, especially in cardiac muscle. Use with care, especially in animals with heart diseases. Vitamin C inactivates cyanocobalamin. Associated with calcium pantothenate leads inactivation of one of the components occurs by pH product (pH stability of different components).

Associated with tetracycline at pH = 4.5 occurs an 1.4% decrease in its activity after 8 hours, 15.6% after 12 hours, 20.1% after one day of use. Do not associate with sodium p-aminosalicylic or some sulfa drugs (risk of crystalluria by acidification of urine). Due ph acid can affects gastrointestinal absorption of some drugs. Inactivates penicillin G peniciloic acid formation. Very high doses of vitamin C can cause diarrhea and urolithiasis. Ascorbic acid is incompatible with salts of iron (III) forming ferrous ascorbate (used as anemic).

With nicotinamide at pH = 3.8 forms a 1:1 complex, which also has physiological activity. 1% acid solution can decompose carbonates, salts amides acid, salicylates, benzoates, theobromine and sodium salicylate, forming precipitates (salicylic acid, benzoic acid, theobromine) or release of carbon dioxide.

Taken in highly viscous mucilage, destruction is accelerated. Reduce Fehling’s solution even if it is cold. Avoid contact with metals.
