The activity spectrum of gentamicin is quite broad, including Gram-negative and Gram-positive germs (Pseudomonas spp., Klebsiella spp., Enterobacter spp., Serratia spp., E. coli, Proteus spp., Salmonella spp., Actinobacillus spp., Bordetella bronchiseptica, Fusobacterium, Haemophylus, Campylobacter spp., Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Actinomyces, Erysipelotrix, Clostridium, Listeria etc.). INDICATIONS

The treatment of bacterial infections of digestive tube (gastritis, enteritis, dysenteries, enthero-colites) on the swine and young bovine produced by gentamicin sensitive germs.

POSOLOGY, ADMINISTRATION WAY AND MODE

Swine: the product is administered embedded in the drinking water or in the fodder, in the following doses:

- colibacillose: 1 g powder/ 10 L drinking water / day, (or 0,1 g powder/ 10 kg body weight/ day, respectively 4 mg gentamicin/ kg body/ day) divided in two doses administered at the range of time of 12 hours

- dysentery: 2 g powder / 10 l drinking water, also divided into two doses/ day

The treatment is issued for 3 – 5 days.

Young bovine: the product is administered embedded into milk, water, etc., in the following doses:

- on the first day: 1 g powder / 100 kg body weight (4 mg gentamicin / kg body), two times a day

- during the following days: 1 g powder / 100 kg body weight (4 mg gentamicin / kg body), one time a day

The treatment is issued for 3 – 5 days.

If the animals don’t show an improvement of the health state, the veterinary will be consulted, for the re-evaluation of the diagnosis.

CONTRAINDICATIONS, CAUTIONS AND ADVERSE REACTIONS

It is not administered for the animals that show a hyper-sensitivity to gentamicin. It will be carefully administered to the animals with serious renal disorders or neuromuscular diseases. The powder must not be administered as that. The amino-glycosides may produce neuro-muscular blockage, facial edema, peripheral neuropathy and hyper-sensitivity reactions. The hematologic and hepatic effects may rarely produce. Gentamicin passes into the milk. It is no available information concerning the bad action of gentamicin orally administered over the pregnant animals. The amino-glycosides must be carefully used together with other neurotoxic, nephro-toxic and oto-toxic medicines: amfotericin B, aciclovir, bacitracine (parenteral use), cisplatun, metoxifluran, polimixin B or vancomicin, other amino-glycosides. On the use together with beta-lactamic antibiotics, it may produce the synergy against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and enterococci. The association (synergy) between the amino-glycosides and penicillins, cefalosporines, is extremely good in the therapy, because after the destruction of cellular wall by them, the amino-glycosides penetrate better inside the microbial cell. In the case of an accidental overdosing, it is recommended the administration of carbenicilin or ticarcilin in a dose of 12 – 20 g/ day. Gentamicin is incompatible in solution with: amfotericina B, benzilpenicillin, ampicillin, carbencilin, cefalotin, chloramphenicol, hemisuccinat, heparin, sulfadiazine, cloxaciline, the occurrence of precipitations being possible. The salts (of sodium, calcium, potassium), sulphates, chlorines, phosphates and nitrates consistently decrease the effect of gentamicin, therefore it is not recommended the combination with other preparations.
