PHARMACO-THERAPEUTICAL ACTION

Enrofloxacin is a chemo-therapeutic substance with a wide range and powerful anti-microbial action, even over the germs resistant to antibiotics. It is a fluorite 4-quinolone derived, taking part to the last generation of synthetic quinolones. It has the lowest toxicity of the whole group of quinolones.

The germicide action is issued by the inhibition of the DNA gyrase enzyme, with an important role in the synthesis of nucleic acids, which determines the death of bacterial cell. It operates with bactericide on the Gram-positive and Gram-negative germs, micro-plasmas and Chlamydia.

It is not administered for the poultry that produce eggs for the human consumption. It is not administered for the pregnant, lactant in dogs and for the dogs with epilepsy antecedents. It is not administered for the canine young and for the fowl babies during the growing stage, because the articular cartilage may be irreversibly affected by fluoroquinolones. The administration of fluoroquinolones at the canine young up to the age of 12 months may provoke articular lesions (changes of the cartilages). Due to the fact that on the administration of quinolones, there have been registered the cases of cristaluria, the dehydration of animals must not be allowed. For the animals with renal and hepatic disorders, the doses will be adjusted to avoid the accumulation of medicine in the body.

The intake of high doses during the pregnancy may provoke the loss of fetus and a toxic state. The administration of high doses, for a long time, during the growing period at the dogs, produce cartilaginous erosions that lead to permanent limps. On the administration of products based on enrofloxacin, it was noticed that the contrary effects may occur quite rare.

The following symptoms may occur on the respiratory apparatus: anorexia, belch, diarrhea, abdominal pains.

The neurotoxic symptoms that may occur: decrease of the visual acuity, dizziness, cephalalgia and convulsions. The allergic reactions that may occur are: rashes, photo-sensitivity, fever, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia. The administration of enrofloxacin is counter-indicated during the reproduction period, because it may cause the death of the fetus.

It is not administered for the poultry that produce eggs for the human consumption. The administration of antacids prohibits the absorption of enrofloxacin. It has a contrary action to chloramphenicol, macrolide antibiotics, tetracycline and un-steroid anti-inflammatory substances.

The overdosing may produce digestive symptoms, like belch and diarrhea. Another consequence of overdosing may be hemolytic. It is not recommended the concomitant administration of fluoroquinolones with nitrofurantoin. The fluoroquinolones increase the neurotoxic effects of cyclosporine.
