Ivermectin is a macrocyclic lactone antibiotic, obtained as a result through the fermentation of the Stretomyces avermilitis terrestrial microorganism, subsequently chemically hydrogenated. The antiparasitic mechanism is done both by stimulating the presynaptic release of gamaaminobutiric acid (GABA) and by increasing the affinity of GABA receptors, disrupting nerve impulses.
GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter and plays an important role in the development of the mammalian brain processes and the functioning of peripheral neurons in nematodes and of the neuromuscular synapses in arthropods, producing a flaccid paralysis of the parasite. Compared to cestodes and nematodes, where GABA has no role, ivermectin is not active. Ivermectin is active against larvae (Hypoderma, Gastrphylus, Oestrus) and against insects that feed on blood and cellular debris (lice, ticks etc).
Pigeons and cage birds.
