PHARMACO-THERAPEUTICAL ACTION

The colistin sulfate is a poly-peptide antibiotic of the group of polymyxins, with bacterial actions on the Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shighella spp., Salmonella spp., Actinobacillus spp., Bordetella spp.).

Its activity is based on the attachment of the colistin sulfate molecule on the phosphate group of phospholipids and on the lipid fraction of lipo-poly-sugars of the cellular membrane.

In the case of oral administration, the colistin is absorbed very difficult at the level of intestine, fact that determine good results in the treatment of enteritis generated by the mentioned germs.

- For calves, milk pigs, lambs and rabbits – the product is administered dissolved in the drinking water, infusion of plants or milk, in the dose of 0,9 – 1,2 g powder / 100 kg body weight/ day (4,5 – 6 mg colistin sulfate/ kg g.c respectively 100.000 UI/kg g.c), for 3 – 6 days

- For poultry (hens, turkey hens, ducks, geese, pigeons, quails, pheasants, guinea hens) it is administered dissolved in the drinking water, in the dose of 9 – 12 g powder / 100 liters / day (4,5 – 6 mg colistin sulfate/kg g.c respectively 100.000 UI/kg g.c ), for 3 – 6 days. CONTRAINDICATIONS, CAUTIONS AND ADVERSE REACTIONS

It is not used in case of hyper-sensitivity to the active substance or Excipient. If the product is administered for the animals with serious renal insufficiencies, and the treatment is extender over the recommended period (3 – 6 days), it may occur a nephrotoxicity risk.

It may be used during the pregnancy, lactation period or in the blowing period. Being a medicine with oral intake, which is not absorbed at the digestive tract level, the concomitant administration with other oral use medicines, which include bivalent metallic ions (e.g. calcium or magnesium salts) will be avoided. The action of colistin over the germs Pseudomonas is magnified under the presence of sulfametizol, sulfamethoxazole and sulfacetamide.

The product must not be overdosed, due to the nephrotoxicity of the active substance. Colistin is incompatible in the alkaline environment, at pH over 7,5. It forms complexes with bivalent metallic ions (Ca2+, Mn2+, Fe2+).
